In addition to nation-wide events, some extra resources are also launching to celebrate International Women’s Day.
One of these is the Australian Taxation Office launching a “Women and Super” campaign, aiming to encourage Australian women to take control of their super and increase their retirement savings by taking 5 simple steps.
Women in Australia generally have significantly less super than men, leaving them financially vulnerable in their retirement years. An assessment of super balances recently showed that in 2009-10, the average retirement payout was $112,600 for women and $198,000 for men. There are many reasons why women might have less super to retire on than men. These include career breaks to raise children, working part-time to care for children and pay inequality. As a result, many women rely on the government age pension (approximately $19,469 p.a.) as their main source of retirement income.
Wherever you are this International Women’s Day, make sure to attend an event that celebrates women and all their accomplishments.
