Your enjoyment of becoming a six or 7-figure business owner means getting comfortable with what you’re achieving. It takes backing yourself confidently as you move through each stage of growth.
But you might find yourself having to ‘catch up with who you’ve become’ and dealing with mindset issues like Imposter Syndrome along the way.
You might be asking yourself, “Can I really have that?” or, “Who am I to think I can have all this success, wealth, happiness?”
So, once you have a 6 to 7 figure business, what can you do to acknowledge those milestones and own who you’ve become?
First, let’s talk about that pesky “upper limit” problem
You’ve already come so far. You’re celebrating significant milestones. You’re sitting in the pocket of a six to seven-figure business, yet something is still not quite right.
How do you become comfortable with your success without closing the door on it?
When we start our businesses, we don’t always have many people who believe in us. We may not believe in ourselves either. We may have an “upper limit problem” (as first coined by Gay Hendricks in his book “The Big Leap”) about how much wealth it is okay to have.
When Imposter Syndrome, or resistance, or blockages show up, they are often in our heads. They are the upper limiting factors.
- How much happiness can I have?
- How many good relationships can I have?
- How many clients is it okay for me to have?
- How many followers is it okay for me to have?
- How much money is it okay to have sitting in my little bank account?
The solution includes surrounding ourselves with people who can see our potential and make it okay to succeed and grow. For example, here in the HerBusiness Network, women genuinely celebrate each other’s success.
Escaping the “Hard Work” myth and the burnout that can result
When she set up Your Property Strata, Amanda Farmer also had to rewire her mindset when she shifted from a busy solopreneur to building a profitable high six-figure business differently.
In our recent conversation, this successful lawyer commented, “As busy, type-A personality solopreneurs, we come out of the womb working hard and thinking we have to work hard. I come from a family of small business owners, and it was always about hard work. Nothing comes easy. If you wanted anything, you had to put the work in. So that was ingrained in me. And that’s not at all a bad thing. But in terms of mindset shifts, I’ve had moments in the last few years where I don’t really feel like I’m working hard enough because I have recurring revenue with my online membership. When I went to the south of France for six weeks, I still had money coming in without seeing clients or doing billable hours.”
Amanda’s had self-sabotage moments of panic where she’s wondered whether she’d better create a new product, host another webinar, or launch a sale before year-end because she doesn’t feel stressed enough or like she’s working hard enough. The result is she does more and more, and last November she burnt out. Yet, it didn’t have to happen.
Even she says, “I’m not doing that this year, and I feel so much better for it. But my numbers are good—even better than last year. And that’s a shift for me. It doesn’t have to be hard. It doesn’t have to be stressful if you’re enjoying it and you feel relaxed, fulfilled and excited by each day.”
Really Owning What You’ve Become
When Amanda moved away from a traditional law firm business model, she started working with local councils and developed a line of business she could replicate. It grew from councils to private enterprise and eventually her online membership. Amanda helps people who live in apartments with complex situations they need resolving. She’d run webinars for local councils and could also open up the doors to her membership.
“As well as getting paid for the webinar, I got to invite new members to join the community. I had a section of the webinar where I talked about the membership, what’s included, how you join, the benefits, and sharing member stories. I thought I was doing that reasonably well. I was doing well on sales and getting new members at the end of each webinar, which was great.”
Around that time, Amanda joined the HerBusiness Marketing Success Mastermind, where the group happened to be learning how to do webinars a little better and how to amp them up. She submitted her slides to the Mastermind group, where they got thoroughly juiced up. Amanda doubled her results at her next webinar. She nearly fell off her chair.
“I get it now,” she posted to the Facebook group, “Something about that webinar, the way I was talking, they ended up buying membership. We can feel like we’re shouting about our product or our service. We can feel like we’re being over salesy, but nine times out of ten, we’re not, we are squeaking about who we are. We need to turn up the volume on sharing what it is we do.”
Amanda’s also run in-person events where she’s had ten minutes to talk about her membership. People have come up to her afterwards and said, “Amanda, your membership offer is very subtle.”
And she thought she was being “over the top”!
This realisation is important. You might’ve been having a conversation like this inside, too, whether consciously or subconsciously. You don’t want to be super salesy. You don’t want to be super pushy, but you’re also not asking for the sale with any level of conviction.
With the support from HerBusiness, Amanda learned how to turn up the volume so the people can hear her excellent message in a way that she is unapologetic about the value she brings. When she whispered, they didn’t get it. But, when she spoke with conviction, people understood what an incredible community they needed to be a part of.
All you need to reach 6 and 7 figures finally is in your head
Even after you’ve got your thinking right about the direction of your business…
Even when you’ve created a vision pulling you into the future…
Even after you’ve ditched the painful habits of doing everything and finally set up some robust systems and processes to free up your time and capacity.
Even after all that, you can still hold yourself back because you haven’t yet caught up to who you’ve become.
But you know now, you can. And you can do it by surrounding yourself with the people who understand your potential, are walking alongside you on the same path and who lift you as you do them.
