When it comes to leading a business, visibility matters. Not for the sake of being seen — but because your leadership creates momentum, inspires your team, builds trust with potential clients, and opens doors to new opportunities.
Yet for many women business owners, showing up online as a leader — especially on LinkedIn — can feel unnatural, unclear, or even intimidating.
In a recent episode of the HerBusiness podcast, I spoke with Jo Saunders, a leading LinkedIn strategist who’s been helping service-based business owners transform their LinkedIn presence for over 15 years.
Our conversation reminded me of something I often say inside the HerBusiness Network:
Your business grows when your leadership grows.
And LinkedIn is a powerful place to lead — when you know how to use it.
Here are some of the key insights from our conversation, especially relevant for women business leaders looking to build trust, visibility, and sales on LinkedIn.
Leadership on LinkedIn Isn’t About Being Loud
A common misconception is that you have to be highly polished, overly professional, or constantly promoting yourself to be successful on LinkedIn. But Jo reminds us that people connect with people — not personas.
Leadership on LinkedIn means being:
- Clear on your values and strengths
- Consistent in your message
- Authentic in how you communicate
Your content doesn’t need to be perfect. But it does need to be purposeful.
Build Trust Before You Ask for the Sale
The most effective leaders on LinkedIn aren’t just selling — they’re educating, engaging, and being of service. They understand the principle Jo calls “Connect-fluence” — the art of connecting to build influence, and then letting that influence drive conversions.
What does that look like in practice?
- Sharing valuable content that solves real problems
- Commenting thoughtfully on others’ posts
- Creating signature content that’s worth saving and sharing
- Using your profile as a landing page for your leadership
Your LinkedIn Profile is a Credibility Asset
One of the biggest missed opportunities Jo sees is a neglected or unclear profile.
As she says:
“LinkedIn is Google-able. Your profile is often the first impression people get of you as a leader.”
Here are three quick profile tweaks to boost your presence:
- Update your headline to reflect what you actually do — clearly and confidently
- Use the Featured section to highlight your current offers, lead magnets, or events
- Write your About section in the first person — speak directly to the people you want to connect with
Don’t Be Everywhere. Be Strategic.
As a leader, your time is precious. You don’t have to be on every platform — you just need to choose the right one for your goals.
If you work in a B2B space or your buyers are other professionals, LinkedIn is likely the best platform for leveraged visibility.
But even then, don’t fall into the trap of random posting. As Jo says, if you’re just “showing up” because you feel like you should — but you’re not clear on what you want to be known for or who you’re speaking to — the algorithm (and your audience) will feel that disconnect.
Final Thought: Lead With Intention
LinkedIn is no longer just a place to list your résumé or post the occasional article. It’s a strategic platform for leadership visibility — when used with intention.
Whether you’re actively growing your network, attracting clients, or looking for aligned partnerships, showing up on LinkedIn as a confident, values-driven leader can help you grow your influence and your business.
