We interviewed Katherine Sampson of Healthy Habits for the August issue of our Women in Business eNewsletter. Katherine is the Founder and Managing Director of Australia’s largest and fastest growing sandwich franchise, Healthy Habits. She established her first sandwich bar in 2004 and has grown her business to 32 stores Australia-wide selling over two million sandwiches a year and serving 6,000 customers per day. Her business success had humble beginnings as Katherine, aged 27 and a single parent with two small children, dared to take the plunge and buy her first business when a relative decided to sell their sandwich bar. 7 years later she owned 4 businesses and in 2004 she decided it was time to take a major bite out of the sandwich market in Australia, which had no dominant brand leader. She established a franchise business and has since opened a total of 32 stores. Since then the Healthy Habits brand has grown in terms of profitability, market share and prestige, which has greatly enhanced Katherine’s business acumen and experience. Most recently, Katherine sold a major share in the business to the Dymocks Group of Companies. This will provide the infrastructure and investment needed to assist an expansion of the brand across Australia and overseas. In this interview we discussed:
- How the business came about.
- The role that strategic planning played in the growth and development of her business.
- What some of the things she measures to know that she’s on track.
