Should you be setting new year’s resolutions for your social media activity? On the latest episode of the Social Media for Small Businesses podcast, we look at how small business owners can revamp their social media presence for the new year. Guest speaker Louise, the woman behind Foxy and Fabulous, offers her tips and advice on how to maximise your social media resources to match your professional vision. As a social media mentor and a professional photographer, she has benefited from the tools afforded by the ever-evolving social media landscape.
Social media has helped Louise by connecting her to a network of “smart, sassy, like-minded people” with whom she shares information and knowledge. It has also established her reputation as a specialist in social media, which has in turn opened doors to offline opportunities such as networking and speaking engagements. Louise foresees two social media trends for 2013: content visualisation and mobile accessibility.
According to her, social media is tending increasingly towards visual media such as video and images to support more traditional content – an addition that enhances searchability by cutting through all the noise online. As well, she encourages small business owners to optimise their websites for mobile access – a growing trend among social media users today. With eight social share buttons on her site, there is no doubt that Louise herself is taking advantage of the benefits of social media for her business.
“I want to own the eyeballs that are looking at my content, so everything I do is directing traffic back to my own url.” Her tips for those considering their New Years social media resolutions are simple: get clear on your vision; get educated; and get embedded – social media is only as effective as the time and commitment you put into it. By the same token, Louise says that using social media should not feel onerous. She encourages users to have fun and to recognise the limitless opportunities afforded by social media.
