- Before you make the final commitment to self-publish your book, do your due diligence and undertake background research. While there are many reputable self-publishing service providers, the industry is still in its infancy and there are some unscrupulous businesses which will happily rip off unsuspecting authors.
- Publishing a book is a long-term project (on average, it can take between 2–8 months from initial draft manuscript to published book) so don’t be too impatient to get to the finish line! It’s taken you a while to write your manuscript so it’s important that you respect the fact that editing and book design are also creative processes that require time to complete.
- Be willing to invest in your book by working with publishing experts such as editors and book designers. They have the professional knowledge and skills to help you to produce a high-quality outcome for your self-published book.
