People have always said, “Good work is hard to find,” and that is true now more than ever, despite high unemployment figures. In this recent herBusiness podcast, we talk to Mandy Johnson about her book, “Winning the War for Talent.” In this interview, Mandy discusses her book and how to attract and keep the people who can make our businesses profitable.
The labour pool for good people is shrinking and the war for talent is getting worse. HR is atrophying and complacency and outdated HR practices are to blame, as well as recruitment not being a priority in corporations and small businesses. Mandy explains what we, as recruiters, are doing wrong and what we can do to fix it.
Companies should be “recruiting for attitude and training for skills,” in some cases. Depending on the situation, especially in a tight labour market, you can recruit high achievers and teach skills, as Mandy says. Businesses are focused on their application processes when they should be focused on hiring outcomes. Mandy says if you focus on finding and hiring the best people for the job and the right fit for the company, “75% of your problems go away.”
