Welcome to Day 4 of 30 Days of Social Media. Today we look at 7 ways to be social using social media. When it comest to being social with social media I have found that the best results and most rewards have come from engaging with others that I ‘meet’ online. Using social networks and other social media (like blogs and online communities) I’ve made new connections, deepened relationships and shared resources. The ability to make connections has been especially beneficial for my Australian Businesswomen’s Network community with whom I want to communicate frequently and to whom I want to provide resources that they can use to grow their business.
So, today we look at 7 ways to be more social using social media.
START HERE: Watch this video for today’s lesson.
The video explores these seven avenues for being more social.
- Share This. Many websites now feature the Share This function which allows you to post information about an article or webpage to your social networks. It’s a great way to communicate relevant information to your community.
- Blog Comments. Comment on your favourite blogs to engage with the author and with those also reading the blog. If you have the same areas of interest, it could be that you could be good collaborators as well.
- Facebook. Use the ‘Like this’ and comments feature to engage with those that you are friends with. The ability to comment on someone’s photos, posts and status are one of the most valuable features of Facebook. Use it professionally to connect with clients and colleagues by showing genuine interest in what they are doing and in what they are sharing.
- Twitter. Twitter will work for you best if you use it like an ‘intercom’ rather than a ‘megaphone’. That means, engage and have conversations. Comment on what others are saying (of course be sincere and don’t just comment for commenting’s sake). Often people will be asking questions to which your experience and expertise can add value.
- Reviews. Review a book, review a product and you can make a valuable contribution to another.
- LinkedIn Questions and Answers. This is one of my favourite features of LinkedIn. (If you’re not using LinkedIn yet, no problem. We’ll talk more about LinkedIn in a future 30 Days of Social Media episode.) Q&A allow you to take part in conversations that you have some thought leadership and thereby establishing yourself as a professional and expert. There are many categories of questions so you’re sure to find an area to which you feel you can contribute best.
- Digg. Check out Digg for what the community (those that post to Digg) consider popular, useful and most liked. If your submission receives enough Diggs you can get on the front page for millions of visitors to see. Learn more about DIgg here.
