Have you ever been offered an opportunity that you know isn’t right? You have that feeling in your gut that screams don’t do it. Do you listen to your intuition, or do you say yes anyway? My last post for HerBusiness discussed how to be open to those amazing opportunities that come along using my Opportunity Barometer. If you scroll down the list of barometer options you’ll see my highly scientific (insert laugh) measures of “Did you groan?” and “Did your mind immediately answer no?” It’s these two options I want to talk about in this post.
Is it right for you?
I was recently offered an opportunity that seemed exciting and flattering on the surface. However, once I did a little digging I could see it just wasn’t right for me. My initial search for answers to my questions of its validity quickly turned to groans. It didn’t take me long to realise this opportunity was not congruent with my business vision and so it was easy to pass on it. When you’re starting out in business, or even as you’re still establishing your niche, it can be really easy to say yes to everything. We want to please others (it’s trained from a young age), and there’s that little voice in the back of your mind that tells you this might be the only opportunity you’ll see for a while. Don’t be too eager to please all the time and definitely don’t listen to that voice! Listen to your gut.
Congruency = authenticity
Decisions made when you are considering your gut feeling and based on what works within your business vision are always going to be congruent. This congruency leads to the authenticity that is needed to build and sustain any meaningful relationship – in business or otherwise. So next time you’re offered an opportunity, consider how congruent it is for you and your business before saying yes. It’ll make your decision making faster and better.
