The past few years have seen many businesses struggle to adapt and pivot in the face of changing circumstances, but for some, these challenges have led to significant breakthroughs.
We’ve compiled a few stories from business owners who have experienced transformative changes in their businesses, whether through launching a membership program, shifting to an online model, or stepping back from the day-to-day to focus on bigger-picture goals.
Shandra Moran of The Transit Lounge shared that her biggest breakthrough in the last three years was launching a membership/group program.
Although Shandra had wanted to do it for years, she had never taken action until she started working with a mentor who helped her see the potential of a scalable group program. Shandra started with a pilot program, and even when COVID hit, she could continue supporting her group members through the crisis. The ongoing membership program has allowed her to support more people, create a lower price point than private coaching, and work towards her priority of being ‘geoflexible’ (location flexible).
Fiona Keary of Style Liberation shared that her most significant breakthrough was moving from a 90% in-person time-for-money business model to generating 67.5% of her revenue online through courses and membership since 2020. Adding a membership offering during the first COVID lockdown allowed Fiona to continue operating when in-person services ceased for 4.5 months. Now, she has a leveraged business that gives her more flexibility and the ability to serve clients across Australia and New Zealand. This shift allowed her to scale from a team of two to seven in just 2.5 years.
Gillian Erskine of Piano Teaching Success discovered a talent for interviewing and connecting with people, and putting herself “out there” on a YouTube show opened doors to many opportunities. This newfound fame and influence allowed Gillian to build a great team that powered their business forward and gave her the life she wanted. Launching two memberships in two years allowed Gillian to create a direct source of income that she feels more in control of instead of relying on franchisees’ success and ability to grow their music school businesses.
For Anna James of Sohovian, her most significant breakthrough was forced upon her when tragedy struck. After losing a loved one, Anna was forced to break her addiction to working in the business and trust her team to take the reins. This led to a mindset shift that allowed Anna to shift from the day-to-day and focus on bigger-picture goals like process design, system enhancement, automation, and marketing. The result has been more bandwidth to think bigger and grow the business.
Kristy-Lee Billett of People Powered HR shared that her most significant breakthrough was moving from a 1:1 swapping time for money structure to a 1:many model. By shifting from in-person to online and a more leveraged model, Kristy-Lee has been able to help more people, work with more diverse businesses, and ultimately have more impact. She attributes her success to surrounding herself with the right people, learning from those ahead of where she wants to be, taking massive imperfect action, and investing in herself and her development.
These business breakthrough stories highlight the importance of taking action, seeking support and being willing to pivot when necessary. By pushing past fear and uncertainty, businesswomen can unlock new opportunities and create a more significant impact than they ever thought possible.
