I recently caught up with one of our HerBusiness members Zoe Freeman and we were talking about networking. She coined a great term that I’m going to borrow. It’s MINGLEPHOBIA – ie. the fear of mingling. I know I’ve definitely been a sufferer exhibiting symptoms such as:
- Wanting to hide in a corner at networking events
- Visiting the bathroom more than is healthy to avoid contact
- Making calls to friends that are NOT at the event to ‘check in’ and
- Sticking like glue to the friend I brought with me to the event.
There’s good news though.. and that is that Minglephobia is curable. And you too can overcome it with small steps ;-) Here’s what Zoe had to say: “Despite my minglephobia, I went along to the “Make the Most of Your Membership” and was very relieved to find that the structured program and great organisation made it simply just a great place to meet like-minded women. No sales pitch or card dealing required! That being said I gained a great business contact out of the night and also secured a fantastic new client. It completely turned me around on networking and I’ll definitely be at the next event.
