Ambition, drive and motivation are funny things. When you’re on the bandwagon there is no stopping you. Nothing will get in your way. Period.
This is often the key to success, but then sometimes it backfires.
We can be so ambitious and motivated to succeed that we trip ourselves up. Every mini achievement feeds that ego; each victory devoured fattens the success bucket and in the same way sugar becomes an addiction, our success ego becomes addicted to continual success and is constantly driving to get to that next level. Success becomes the drug of choice. The ambitions get bigger and better. This is not necessarily a bad thing, however, addictions can get out of hand and take over logical reasoning. We need to be kinder to ourselves, just like we are with our loved ones. We always call out those closest to us when their success ego is out of hand, being kind and supportive when needed. We can do this for ourselves too – be kind and gentle when it’s required. This certainly doesn’t mean go into cruise mode; you still need to place expectations on yourself, push the boundaries and aim for success, but make sure you do a reality check every now and again. Ask yourself are you having enough me time, family time, sleep, rest?
Watch out because that success ego can turn you into a crazy obsessed lunatic with only one speed – go. Make sure you can look at the speedo and slow down when required. Apply the brakes, change gears, pull over – whatever you need to do to keep your success ego in check. And here’s the kicker. You know that feeling you get when you realise you’ve had a smile on your face for some time because what you are doing makes you happy? You know the happiness that has an inner connection to your soul? You’re probably thinking about one of those moments right now reading this. The best way to keep your success ego in check is go do more of that. Ambition, drive and motivation are funny things. When you’re on the bandwagon there is no stopping you.
