I recently wrote an article on home organisation called 10 Ways To Be Neat, Tidy, And Organised. Those little home rituals – and people’s comments about their own – got me thinking about similar things you can do in your office. So here are 6 ways to be more neat, tidy, and organised at work.
1. Put things away after you use them
Your workspace doesn’t have to be pristine, but scattered papers, strewn files, and stuff everywhere can be distracting and time-wasting. If something doesn’t have a home, toss out something you don’t need and make room. You’ll find things faster and feel more in control.
2. Tidy your office before you leave for the day
It’s far more motivating to sit down and begin work in a tidy space than in one that feels chaotic. Whether ‘work’ is an office you travel to or a place in your home, ‘sign off’ for the day by clearing your desk, neatening your work zone, and tucking in your chair.
3. Clear your computer
Just like your work zone, your technology zone will be a happier, more productive place if you take a little care to keep your computer organized. Delete or archive old files, keep your desktop clear, remove unused software, and update regularly used applications.
4. Make tomorrow’s to-do list today
To help you switch off and relax at the end of your work day, do a mental download of all the things you need to think about tomorrow into your diary or task list. Highlight the top three priorities so your subconscious has something to mull over. And mark your most important task so you can start the day promptly when you arrive.
5. Upgrade your equipment
If your computer, software, stationery, desk, or chair is a constant source of frustration, then upgrade it. Persevering with inefficient or ineffective tools costs you time and mental energy. Invest in the best equipment your business can afford and you’ll feel more motivated and organized every day you use them.
6. Cheer up your desk
I’m not into photos and personal paraphernalia in my work zone, but I do feel energised by a few little touches. In my office I have a beautiful orchid, scented candle, small watercolour by an artist friend, prints of amazing images from the Hubble Space telescope, plus a snow globe of Manhattan and a cute plaque about shoes and shopping, both gifts from friends. It’s just enough to add beauty and personality without being distracting. Choose a few things to make your work zone brighter and more inspiring. How about you? Will you adopt any of these ideas for being more neat, tidy, and organized at work?
