Thinking like a 6 and 7-Figure business owner is a great first step to achieving a 6 to 7 figure business. But you also need to do what a successful business owner does.
So, what are the doable steps that let you focus on the few things that matter, and how exactly do you stop trying to do all the things?
When we talk to women joining the HerBusiness Network about the challenges they face growing their businesses, the same common themes always emerge.
These include having enough time, having sustainable systems that work and talk to each other, creating the capacity to work on business development, and learning to let go and trust in people when delegating.
What to do before you do anything else
We recently spoke to Amanda Farmer about her business, Your Property Strata, and the actions she took to move in the direction she wanted to go. In addition to changing the way she thought about her business, and before she took any action at all, she did one important thing.
She STOPPED.
She explained, “I had to take the time to work out where the high-value tasks were. And as lawyers, as any busy businessperson, we are often running around doing everything all of the time. So, I had to stop and take stock of exactly what I was doing.”
For Amanda, that meant writing down everything she worked on and then making some hard decisions.
- Do I need to be doing this, or can somebody else do it?
- Can I get rid of doing that?
- Is this something I really love?
- How much value does this bring to my business?
- Where is the high value on which I can focus?
And as Amanda will tell you, it didn’t come naturally. She had to train herself to sit down and assess the success of her days, and even her happiness with each day, by looking at the leverageable actions she took.
The outcome was being able to reach out for new opportunities.
“I signed off on a project with a local council, which is where I do a lot of my really leveraged work. This project was not about putting out fires or checking somebody else’s work and highlighting their mistakes. I got focused on useful activities. Right?”
Amanda’s story is an important one because, on any day, a thousand bright, shiny objects can be calling for our attention.
What Amanda looked at was the most strategic action she could take to give her the most “bang for her buck”. In the process, Amanda created amazing strategic alliances, doing exactly the sort of work to leverage her skills—and her business.
So, what does Amanda’s example teach us about our own businesses? What should we do, or not do, to create the 6 to 7 figure business of our dreams?
