As the Olympics of 2012 wrap up, the British government is patting itself on the back at how successful the Games have been for the country. It is not just governments that benefit from the Olympics though; many business owners can cash in on the Olympic spirit too.
Obvious PR opportunities for businesses are to associate themselves with a medal-winning Olympian as an ambassador or for sports clubs to promote their individual sports to future Olympians, but there are many other ways to make hay while the Olympic rings still glitter.
A savvy business could find a way to tie into a popular sport to cash in on the public goodwill, for example sailing after the Australian team’s fantastic results. We could soon be seeing a sea of sailing themed cakes, conferences, restaurant events and training.
Food businesses can find out what a local athlete’s favourite training food is and create dishes around the ingredients, or personal trainers can set up Olympic-inspired programs.
Travel agents will be buzzing with opportunities to talk about the locations for various Olympic sports, such as London’s Stratford, Weymouth on the south coast, Derby in England’s north or Edinburgh in Scotland. But then there’s all the Olympic competitor nations as travel destinations. How about a holiday in Andorra, Iceland, Mauritius or Vietnam?
Businesses associated with products and services relevant to the Olympics, such as uniform, shoe, weights, swimming cap, kayak sand ball manufacturers etc can all find opportunities in post-Olympic fever too as more people take up sport after watching their heroes compete.
Fashion stores can use sporty window displays, or focus on their active wear lines while the public is still interested in sport. Even law firms can benefit by advising business owners on the legalities of using the Olympics name and logo in marketing activities!
And then, there’s the planning for Rio 2016. How can your business tie it’s PR activities into the XXXI Olympiad?
