What is your small business story?
“My parents were small business people, however my own small business journey began on my wedding day which was the actual date my husband and I bought our first dairy and beef property in Harvey, a small town in the South West of WA about 140km south of Perth. One of the strengths of our business is that we had a shared goal and worked hard together to achieve it. Our family business now includes our son.”
What has your experience with small business taught you?
“It has certainly taught me the value of hard work and a focus on costs of production. We have been totally responsible for our business decisions and have taken an active, physical hands-on role. This was the only way we developed and grew our business.
Having the courage to back your instincts goes hand-in-hand with knowing your industry or sector and having a sound working knowledge of your market.”
What message do you have for Australia’s small business owners?
“There is a real importance of having clear goals and astute planning on how to achieve them. You need to know what your consumers want, stay in control of your business costs and also be aware of how government decisions impact your operating environment.”
