Often associated with the business world, the word networking is synonymous with cocktail functions, suits and awkward conversations. In reality, we all have a network of relationships – so let’s look at the importance of a network for mums.
Treasure existing networks
New mums should keep their networks strong during maternity leave and, of course, the childcare years. There is more to it though and it’s time we considered being more strategic with our networking activities. After all, your network is a result of your networking activities, and in my experience, we want the former without putting the work into the networking itself!
Broaden your horizons
I have always believed in ‘whole’ networks, meaning we should incorporate our personal and professional relationships in our network plans. Women especially underestimate the relationships they already have in place and are often not as good at reaching out and asking for help. Don’t put all your efforts into one group. For example, it’s normal to be drawn to and bond only with other mums in your mother’s groups, as they provide vital emotional support (along with occasional child-minding favours) as your children grow. Remember however, that effective networks are so much broader and need to be maintained to help you stay visible and connected over time. Keep in touch with your employer, industry, key recruiters, alumni’s, clients and suppliers (if appropriate) while developing and deepening relationships with friends, family and the community around you.
Networking benefits for mums
The value of networks for expectant mums and business owners can’t be underestimated, especially for the months and years they must juggle family and career. The benefit of a strong network is that it is full of people who can help you and who you can help too. To get to this stage in our ‘netships’ we need to invest time and effort learning what others are doing, and what they need, so we can find ways to help – with this intention we will all benefit and not feel isolated in our vital role as a Mum!
