“Seventeen years into my corporate career, I got cancer,” Kaye Wright shares. “That was a real wake up call which forced me to slow down and to stop and evaluate my life. I realised there were some things which needed to change, not the least of which was finding a job which nourished my soul.”
When Kaye’s cancer went into remission, she decided to quit her corporate job and go back to university to complete a degree in Naturopathy. “It was then only natural that I decide to use my experience to set up my own business,” Kaye explains. She had plenty of accounting experience but little experience in marketing and social media. That’s why she signed up for MentorNet, a mentoring program for women in business.
“Running my own business is so much more than just keeping track of the numbers,” says Kaye. “The MentorNet program covered all aspects of business in great depth and, combined with the other resources offered by ABN, my confidence and approach to marketing has come ahead in leaps and bounds.”
Kaye reports that the most valuable part of the MentorNet program was the enlightening discussions with like-minded members of her mentoring pod:
“I was very impressed that my pod was chosen so as to consist of people in aligned service industries, and therefore they had very similar challenges and issues. It was like having an executive committee supporting and monitoring me. MentorNet pushed me to be more disciplined in my approach to getting things done.“
“Being accountable to others is a great motivator and something that is often missing when you work for yourself,” Kaye continues. “As a sole proprietor it is very easy to be overwhelmed with all the tasks that need to be done, and for me that can lead to inactivity. The MentorNet program provided a framework to help me prioritse my tasks and set meaningful goals and deadlines which I then had to be accountable for.”
Long after her mentor program ended, Kaye still calls on her MentorNet pod members for objective, outside advice. Thanks in part to a strong support network, she is able to maintain healthy business growth while also maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
“I love that my success is a direct result of my output,” beams Kaye. “I enjoy seeing the fruits of my labour and being in control of my own destiny.”
