Know your objective. Keep it interesting. Offer something worthwhile. This could be the callcard for any number of marketing campaigns, but these elements are what many businesses neglect when starting out in email marketing, according to recent Nett article How to Write Email Marketing Content. HerBusiness member Megan Barrow featured in this article, offering practical advice on how businesses can make the most out of email marketing.
“The benefits of email marketing are huge,” she explains. “Not only is the cost negligible, it allows you to communicate with your current and prospective customers at one time, twenty-four seven.”
So how can businesses make the most out of their email campaigns, without spamming their customers? Megan Barrow offers this advice:
- Have a clear objective – What do you want to achieve from the communication? Make sure you include a clear Call to Action in the email, making it easy for your readers to act.
- Draw readers in – Include as many ‘teasers’ as possible in your subject line to entice readers to open and read the email.
- Utilise your email ‘real estate’ wisely – Most people view emails in preview panes, so businesses should ensure that they pack-a-punch in the top third of the email. For e-newsletters, a content list (with hyperlinks) allows readers to quickly choose what they want to read.
- Develop an email database – This allows businesses to segment customers to ensure they effectively target their customers according to their specific needs.
Above all, email marketing needs to be interesting and timely. As with any other form of marketing, businesses need to always consider their target market and what is in it for them.
“In terms of content, it’s about looking at how to best help your customers,” says Megan Barrow in Nett Magazine. “Marketing doesn’t have to be rocket science. A lot of it’s about what we, ourselves, want to see.”
