Jane Mallick was introduced to yoga by her mother when she was 15 years old. Her mother was a successful, liberated woman who discovered yoga in the mid-70s, and found that it helped ease her anxiety – so when Jane started showing signs of anxiety and stress in adolescence, her mum took her to yoga classes and retreats.
Jane went on to complete a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Doctorate in Educational Social Psychology. She met and married her husband and had twin boys. She continued to practice yoga as she worked in leadership positions in health, education, nonprofit, and government sectors. But around the time she turned 40, she felt like her life was unravelling, and her work no longer seemed meaningful. Her naturopath suggested that she try tantric feminine yoga, and Jane fell in love with it.
Today, Jane runs Jane Mallick Consultancy, a practice that specialises in yoga, meditation, career transition coaching, women’s health, and more. Her special blend of yoga combines several feminine teachings to give women easy and effective self-care practices they can use to navigate life’s changes. At Tantra Flow Yoga, she teaches women’s yoga classes, as well as organises yoga retreats and workshops. She’s passionate about empowering and supporting women to unlock their highest potential.
“I love yoga so much, so I love the fact that I can do this for my work and share these profound teachings to help awaken others.”
Jane lives on a small hobby farm in Taradale, Australia, where she grows food and flowers for her family, friends, and volunteer travelers who help on the farm. She also enjoys gardening, knitting, and cooking.
Advice that Jane wishes she’d been given when she started her business:
- Create simple systems for admin and finance. It will save you a lot of time.
- Make regular times to review and reflect before moving onto the next exciting idea.
- Follow your passion and gut instinct, and don’t get confused by following others and the latest trends.
Jane’s advice for someone who’s thinking about starting their own business:
“You need to be patient. I’ve found that once you find what you’re doing, stick to it, be consistent, and show up consistently for your clients/customers. There are times when it doesn’t feel like things are moving forward. But if I continue on, believing in my offerings and following my passion, growth happens in a natural and organic way.”
For Jane, these knowledge areas and skills are essential for anyone starting in business:
- Networking with other supportive small businesses so that you can share ideas and have a sounding board for when things get difficult.
- Become confident in marketing and promotion of your products.
- Create systems.
- Create a plan – long term, medium term, and weekly/daily.
We asked Jane to identify the problems in her business that being a HerBusiness member helps to solve.
“I like the planning templates, which have helped me identify my priority growth areas to focus on. I like the range of 1-hour webinars to help me work at my own pace on these priority areas. I’m looking forward to the roundtables to meet other businesswomen in person.”
