Australian Women Online, the self-proclaimed hub of “home grown inspirational women” has given voice to the Businesswomen’s Hall of Fame Inductee Christine Macauley and her powerful opinions on why wives in business are unsung heroes. She suggests that women are “doing the books”, that they come into business, and seek knowledge necessary to develop the business, and also ensure compliance with government regulations. To combat the issue of isolation in business, she says women have tended to react by seeking “contact through business associations, training and women’s groups, all of whom work in part as mentors.” She applauds women’s seemingly greater ability to seek external interaction with peers and involve themselves in community activities.
The specific issue of wives in business as opposed to women as sole owners in business is flagged, noting that wives are typically involved in more masculine orientated enterprises. With this, she suggests comes ownership issues, as “a masculine type of business is almost always perceived as belonging to the male” and women in these relationships are perhaps less recognised for their expertise.
Most importantly, she states that women’s roles in business are not relatable to their visibility, and that “they are the backbone of the business and should be recognised for the role they play and their importance in the decision-making process of the business.” To learn more about why Christine was inducted to the Businesswomen’s Hall of Fame, click here.
