Why did you start your business and what gave you the idea?
I fell into workplace health and safety 25 years ago after I had a workplace injury. Over the years, I got more committed to actually running a business and wanted to create tools and systems to make it easier for people to better manage health and safety.
What do you enjoy most about running your own business?
I developed an online health, safety and wellbeing system and love innovating and developing easy and interactive ways for people to manage their processes. I’ve been running four-week onboarding sessions with clients and have loved every minute of it. They are all signing up as they understand how they can use the system and how it will help them.
What three pieces of advice do you wish you’d been given when you started?
- When you recruit, be really clear what skills you need for the role. This way you don’t fall into the trap of hiring someone you feel comfortable with, rather than someone with skills you need.
- Find a business mentor who can help you create a business development roadmap and set some goals.
- Believe in yourself and invest in yourself.
What advice would YOU give someone thinking about starting a business?
Find the most successful business woman you know and ask them if you can check in with them regularly. And join a local business group to meet people who are in a similar situation to you. A problem shared is a problem halved.
What skills and knowledge areas would you recommend those starting out in business get acquainted with quickly?
Two things:
- Find out all you can about your ideal clients.
- Know your numbers.
What does your IDEAL business look like? Even if you’re not there yet, what would it look like if your business was ideal?
These are my three goals for my ideal business:
- Have a $2,000,000 business by 2026 and a $10,000,000 business by 2028 with $1M profit.
- Be the go-to health, safety and wellbeing tool for education organisations.
- Be the go-to for small businesses who have health and safety contractual obligations.
What problem does being a Member of the HerBusiness Network solve for you and your business? And, how?
Getting clear on my clients and making offers that convert. I am also keen to do business in Australia and joined the group to explore opportunities and take the scariness out of providing services in a country other than New Zealand.
