“Nothing brings me greater joy than hearing feedback from our clients. It’s uplifting to learn how we’ve helped them understand their unique style and the positive impact that has had on their lives.”
Danielle Johansen of Threadicated has worked in various areas of the fashion industry for many years, including design, buying, product development, and marketing. One day, while working in marketing, Danielle received a heartbreaking phone call from a friend who was in tears inside a changing room. She felt defeated and overwhelmed because she couldn’t find any clothing options that fit and flattered her body after having a baby. This incident made Danielle realise that many people struggle with feeling confident and beautiful in their clothes. It was at that moment that she knew there had to be a better way for people to discover their personal style and gain the confidence that comes with it. And so, the idea for Threadicated was born.

Nothing brings me greater joy than hearing feedback from our clients. It’s uplifting to learn how we’ve helped them understand their unique style and the positive impact that has had on their lives. There have been countless moments where their stories of healing after a loss, triumphing in a job interview, or even proposing to the love of their dreams have moved me to tears. What three pieces of advice do you wish you’d been given when you started?
- Embrace the Challenges: Starting a venture is an incredible undertaking that will push you to your limits. However, it’s important to understand that the rewards will far surpass your wildest imagination. Embrace the difficulties as opportunities for personal growth and development. By facing challenges head-on, you’ll emerge stronger, more resilient, and ultimately reap the incredible rewards that await you.
- Embrace Your Evolution: Not everyone will fully comprehend or support your aspirations and the person you are becoming. It’s important to accept that along the way, you may lose some connections. Although this can be challenging, this journey of self-discovery will allow you to uncover your authentic self in ways you never thought possible. Surround yourself with individuals who uplift and inspire you, and embrace your beautiful transformation.
- Patience and Resourcefulness: It’s crucial to remember that everything takes longer and costs more than anticipated. Building a business or pursuing any significant endeavour requires patience, resilience, and resourcefulness. Prepare yourself mentally and financially for unexpected delays and obstacles. By staying adaptable and tapping into your resourcefulness, you’ll find creative solutions to overcome these hurdles and ultimately achieve your goals.
What advice would YOU give someone thinking about starting a business?
There’s no perfect time to start a business. So, instead of getting caught up in excessive planning, I encourage you to start small and start today. The key is to choose a business that truly ignites your passion and brings you joy. Look for something that sparks enthusiasm within you and aligns with your interests. When you’re genuinely passionate about what you do, it becomes a powerful motivator, especially during the challenging times that are bound to come your way.
Rather than trying to force your business into a rigid plan, allow it to unfold naturally. Let the market and your customers guide you on the path. Listen carefully to their needs and preferences, and observe how your business can best serve them. Embracing flexibility and adaptability will enable your business to evolve organically, making it more relevant and successful in the long run.
What skills and knowledge areas would you recommend those starting out in business get acquainted with quickly?
While I learned a lot along the way, knowing certain things in advance would have saved me some heartache. However, my initial naivety about the requirements of starting a business gave me the courage to take on the enormous task. Financials are particularly crucial to familiarise yourself with as they help you understand your runway and how to keep your business in business. Additionally, even if you have someone else managing these areas I would recommend understanding your technology, marketing, sales, customer relationships, and operations. Embrace learning and curiosity as you navigate the exciting adventure of building a business. Enjoy the process and embrace personal and professional growth.
