About 15 years ago, I attended The Science Show’s 30-year reunion at ABC Radio National’s Ultimo Studios. It was a glittering affair and I was there to celebrate the contribution of broadcaster Robyn Williams to science awareness.
One of the most fascinating people I met that evening was the best-selling author, physician and professor of neurology, Oliver Sacks. You may recall that one of his books Awakenings was adapted into an Academy Award-nominated film in 1990, starring Robin Williams and Robert De Niro.
After the party, we shared a taxi, and I shall always treasure those 15 minutes of deep conversation as we drove through the streets in Sydney.
At the time, I was studying a course, Masters in Management and shared with Oliver the details of an assignment I was doing on creativity.
Where did he get his ideas, I wondered, and asked him. “In the water”, he replied.
He swam every day. It was during his laps, with the water flowing past, around and over his body that an inner flow surged. Incredible answers to solutions would wash through him as he trawled up and down the pool. Shortly after his swim, he would use this incoming information in his writing. He had set up his own special routine of power.
This was an “Ah-Ha” moment for me. It sounded similar to the way I received inspiration while out walking. There was something about the physical body moving in synch with inner movement. After that conversation, I carried this forward into my study, and received an HD.
We all get ideas when we are in the flow and being in the flow is different for everybody.
Walking and contemplating is a wonderful way of tapping into your intuition. Getting out into Nature, whether you’re roaming up hills, walking along a beach, strolling through a park surrounded by beautiful flowers or reflecting in the shade of an ancient tree, increases your ability to go with Flow.
Some of my best ideas and “Ah Ha” moments have arisen from my routine of walking. For me, heading out on long scenic walks is Inspirational Time, In fact, it’s amazing the ideas that start to flood my awareness.
As an online trainer and mentor, the aligning of a student to her or his flow is part of my focus. To witness others tap into their intuition and find answers is a joy to behold.
P.S. Start by setting your intent for your day each morning. Then give yourself time to let it in. Once in, you can begin to allow creative flow to move with you through each day. Much like Oliver Sacks swimming his laps.
