We can all think of someone who seems to grab and hold the attention of an audience with what appears to be little effort. Why is that?
They have what is known as “presence”.
Firstly, let’s look at what presence is.
According to the dictionary, presence is:
- The impressive manner or appearance of a person
- The bearing, carriage, or air of a person; especially : stately or distinguished bearing
- A noteworthy quality of poise and effectiveness
What does it take to impress others with your presence? We don’t need to be loud, forceful or over bearing to have presence. There are those who speak in the softest of voices yet people hang on to their every word. They are worth listening to.
How others perceive us comes down to how we behave. If we are genuinely calm, consistent, respectful and clearly on point, people will happily listen to us.
Like leadership, presence is not something that most of us were born with. The good news is; it is something we can develop.
Whether we are leading a team or running a solo operation, there are people we need to deal with to effectively run our business. If we can communicate well with them, it will have a positive impact on our success.
So when it comes to developing your leadership presence, the following tips are worth considering:
1. Own your space
Stand tall, don’t hunch or shrink away. Give a firm handshake and make eye contact with the person you are speaking to.
2. Remember the Vision and Mission
As a leader your goal is to take your team to where you need to go. Remind them of the big picture, especially when they are getting caught up in the minutiae.
3. Give your opinion
Speak up, even when you are going against the tide. Always be clear in what you are saying and in full control of your emotions. Remain calm and be sure that you are coming across as assertive rather than aggressive.
4. Listen Carefully
Give the speaker the attention they deserve. When we know that we are being heard it not only builds our confidence, it also builds trust.
5. Ask Questions
When you ask relevant, helpful questions it shows a level of engagement on your part. It also sends a clear message that you are aware of just what they are trying to achieve.
6. Remain Positive
Even if the situation or feedback is negative. By remaining positive you will show that you are in control of the situation and yourself.
7. Give Feedback
Even when it’s negative, feedback can be delivered in a calm and respectful manner. It is also important to give positive feedback. A little gratitude and praise can go a long way in building trust and confidence, in your team members and in their trust in you as their leader.
There is no question that we are all capable of being effective leaders, if we want to step up and develop the skills. It is the same with presence, you have to be aware and develop those skills and behaviours.
Ultimately it comes down to you. Fully engage with others, carry yourself well, follow through and most importantly be your authentic self.
