HerBusiness CEO Suzi Dafnis was featured in an article about mentors in Cosmopolitan. The article looked at what makes a mentor, why you need one and how to find one. Suzi is quoted several times as she gives her advice about different perspectives on mentoring.
She says: “Not everyone has a clear vision for their career – heck, a lot of us don’t even know what career we want. In fact, it can be a real jungle out there. If you’re looking for a way to create a vision you’re really passionate about, then you need a mentor.”
Different mentoring success stories were also featured in the article along with statistics that support the importance of mentoring in running a business.
On looking for a mentor, Suzi says, “Let you peers know you’re looking for a mentor.” It’s okay to reach out to people you admire and respect, but if you don’t know where to start, HerBusiness has a mentoring program.”
She advised that once you have decided who you want as a mentor, you need to put yourself out there and be honest about your intentions. She says, “Tell them that you admire the work they are doing and that you’re looking to expand your skills. Then simply say, ‘I was wondering if you would be willing to mentor me?’”
Suzi says that after you have found them, it is important to be consistent in meeting with each other and that later, you could even be a mentor to someone else.
