At the recent Kochie’s Business Builder’s Boot Camp in Sydney, keynote speak Mark Bouris, founder of Wizard Home Loans and Yellow Brick Road, addressed the importance of having a board of directors, even for small businesses. “Small business owners need a board of directors as well, so we’re not just in it on our own,” explained attendee Catriona Pollard of CP Communications. “We can get mentors and key people, our accountants and advisors, to actually come in and help us keep ourselves accountable to our business.”
“…the role of the board is not to tell business owners what to do or to make decisions for them”
However, Catriona pointed out, the role of the board is not to tell business owners what to do or to make decisions for them: “I think that a good advisor is one who challenges us as well. We make our own decisions, and we’re responsible for those decisions, but we’re also responsible for finding people to help us get to those decisions.” Catriona attended the boot camp not only for the speakers but also for the networking opportunities. “We’re a PR agency,” she said, “and one of the key things we do for people is figure out who they need to network with and who they need to develop relationships with, because public relations, communications and social media — it’s all about relationships. So you need to develop relationships with key people, and to do that you need to come to events like this to find out who they are. You never know who’s in the room. It could be your next major customer or your next staff member.”
