HerBusiness Member Natasha Hawker, Director of Employee Matters, shares her insights in the article ‘How to Fire Someone’ published in The Sydney Morning Herald. Natasha has over 20 years of experience in Human Resource Management and regularly writes for ABN’s herBusiness Blog. “I used to be known as ‘The Angel of Death’ after having to make redundant some 50-plus employees in my own business,” Natasha shares in the article, which cites five steps in firing an employee.
One of them is to make a decision and stick to it, which Natasha agrees to. Her advice: “You need to be prepared with a script and document everything, be empathetic but strong, professional and unwavering. Communicate effectively with the employee, run a fair process, make it private, know the rights of your employee and communicate with your team as otherwise they might feel this is the start of many terminations.”
