I’ve just been in Toronto at a 3-day conference and it was amazing. And while I was at the airport heading home I got an email from Margot, who’s was one of a number of our members who attended the conference as well.
And she was telling me about a conversation she was having with her sister talking about the “high” feeling after the conference, the process of this wearing off and the harsh reality of the real world when stepping off the plane…
If you’ve ever been to a conference or a done a course or been to a really great networking event, you can probably relate!
You leave the event on such a high, ready to take on the world.
You have notes, you have goals, you might have an action sheet and even some new contacts that you’ve made.
You’ve downloaded all the templates and goodies that the event provided and you’re good to go.
Oh, so you think.
But, before too long that high fades away, sometimes as soon as you get back home and sit at your desk and you find yourself back in your business, alone.
And the doubts start to creep in – can I really do this?
And life happens – the kids get sick, that client quits, your website host goes bankrupt — and the notebook from the conference and your grand plans get placed on a shelf for when you’re going to have time to look at it again.
And time passes and you haven’t taken action on the things that you wanted to.
And this can be a real downer.
And it can feel like a waste of time and money.
But before long you find another event to go, a course to do and you again experience the high that comes with knew knowledge and an expansion of the mind.
I had an events business for 20 years and I’ve seen this happen again and again and I know from my own experience. And while I love seeing our community members come to event after event… what’s more important for me is that they actually take action on what they’re learning because that’s how they’ll see results.
So, I’m on a mission to help you get results from what you’re learning here through our courses and online programs or MasterClasses, any of the free online learning events that you’re taking part in.
I want to give you three things that you can do to be sure that magic doesn’t fade away.
- Stay connected – Stay connected to the people you met and the networks you created, the Facebook groups you’ve joined. I have been hopeless at this in the past – meeting people, taking business cards and then never following up. But I’ve gotten much better. And one of the things I do now is to immediately send off a note saying how much I enjoyed meeting them etc. and suggesting the next step or offering a resource that might be useful to them. The other thing is that if you’re part of a course or event that has a Facebook group — stay connected by actually participating in conversations and asking questions – not just watching from a distance, which can be a real isolating experience.
- Take action quickly – Whatever you decide you want to do, take action quickly — right when you get the urge to. You don’t even have to finish the course or the event. You don’t need ALL the information. The faster you take action the faster you will see results or make a mistake that you can then correct. So when I was at the conference last week, one of the commitments I made to myself is to relaunch our HerBusiness podcast which has been laying dormant for about 18 months. On the plane home I started working on the first four episodes and the workflow. Plus, I also shot off an email to my team to tell them this was what we were doing (they’ve been waiting for me to set up a date and get off my tush and get going with this). Now they’ll be sure to follow up as to what is required of them, and this will keep things moving along. I have a lot more action to take but I’ve made a start.
- Get accountability – This is one that works for me. And whenever we ask our community what would help them getting better results from our trainings and mentoring, their answer is: accountability. So we build that into everything we do — our courses and programs. And it makes a huge difference. I know personally that by telling someone what I’m going to do and stating it publicly, putting a date to it and making it real make all the difference. This is a great thing to do with someone else — another member, another business owner or person in your group of peers — and then checking in with each other and supporting each other to take that next step, not letting each other off the hook.
When we do these three things we start to make progress and we get closer to the ideal business that we’re want for ourselves.
So, next time you’ve acquired some new knowledge and you want to put it into action I encourage you to do those three things.
- Stay connected.
- Take action quickly.
- Get accountability.
That’s exactly what the HerBusiness community is all about and that’s why members who take action in these three areas are seeing the most results.
