HerBusiness member and Managing Director of Galmatic, Eleni Mitakos, has recently featured in the story ‘Turning a hobby into a full-time job’ in the Sydney Morning Herald. The article profiles the growth of Eleni’s car company, which started out as a hobby but was later transformed into a profitable business. Eleni Mitakos recognised a gap in the motoring market when she wrote the book, Galmatic: The Car Handbook for Girls whilst pregnant with her first child in 2004. Since then, she began to offer informal workshops for females wanting to understand cars better. Five years later, Eleni is a successful business owner who employs seven female trainers that deliver six workshops every weekend to help empower women. It took Eleni Mitakos three years for her business to make a profit as she explains that for success, it is not enough to be simply passionate about your hobby, you need to be prepared to strategise to meet market demands.
“I knew it was a fantastic idea, but the I had to go from tinkering around in a hobby business to writing a clear business plan and actively marketing it and setting strategic goals,” says Eleni Mitakos.
