Are you controlling your business or is your business controlling you?
When we were at the HerBusiness REACH Retreat in Hawaii last year we went to a traditional Hawaiian Luau and one of the performers there did an incredible presentation with live flames. As you can see in the photo, he tossed the flames above his head, he also spun them with his feet, made the flames jump from one torch to the next and so much more. We were all transfixed.
But the whole time, even though it looked spectacular and even a little bit dangerous, all of us watching him knew that he had the fire within his control.
Even though fire can be a destructive force, when you know how to use it and you have the right skills, it can also be a very powerful force.
It got me thinking about our businesses, too. When we get the right skills and understanding we can manage our growth and outcomes so we get what we really want. We can channel the energy and momentum of our business in the direction we choose.
BUT… what can also happen if we aren’t prepared, if we don’t have the vision and the support, is the fire can get out of control… our businesses can become overwhelming or consuming.
In Hawaiian culture the Goddess of Fire, Pele, is revered. She is responsible for both creation and destruction. Pele was never far from our minds while we were preparing for the REACH Retreat, and especially while we were there, as the incredible women who joined us at the Retreat gained clarity, focus and direction in their businesses.
