 – Think Big To Grow: Creating a Strong Foundation for Business Success

Growing a business, or achieving any goal, starts with how you think, how big a vision you can hold and how long you can hold that vision while taking the necessary steps to realise it.

In this episode, we’re thrilled to bring you an exclusive interview with Julia Watts of Sample Room, a successful entrepreneur who has grown her business to a seven-figure level.

Julia shares her journey, her challenges, and her strategies for success, focusing on three crucial themes – thinking BIG, project management and understanding your customer.

“Setting clear goals, systemising operations, and thinking big are the pillars of business growth. But remember, you are the golden goose of your business. Look after yourself, because if you stop, the whole business stops.” – Julia Watts

About the host

Suzi Dafnis

Hi there. I’m Suzi Dafnis, CEO at HerBusiness. My BIG passion is helping women business owners to grow and scale their business, so that they can create their ideal lifestyle and make a difference in the world. Every day I am inspired by the more than 30,000 amazing women (and men!) in our community and I love finding the best education, mentors, and resources from around the globe, to help them get the skills, knowledge, and support they need to succeed. It’s been my privilege to lead HerBusiness (formerly The Australian Businesswomen’s Network) for the past 23 years (two+ decades – WOW!) because, whilst I’ve enjoyed success in business, I’ve also experienced the highs and the lows – sometimes you can feel on top of the world and in control and other times you can feel isolated, exhausted and stuck. What has made the biggest difference for me has always been having great people around me and having a lifelong commitment to learning. That’s why I am so passionate about the work we do here at HerBusiness – providing a Connection Network for women in business to get the mentors, contacts, referrals, knowledge, and skills they need to grow their confidence, make more money, build their businesses, expand their network and create the lives they love. My entrepreneurial journey started in the spare room of my Sydney apartment in 1994 when my business partner and I started a boutique events company that represented speakers and authors from the USA, here in Australia. Over the years I’ve grown multiple multi-million dollar businesses in the events, publishing and education niches – with teams in Australia, New Zealand, and the USA. Not everything has worked and there has been a degree of trial and error, and a lot of bumps in the road. But I have always had a strong commitment to always surrounding myself with great mentors and like-minded peers – a Connection Network that I can depend on and who can depend on me to be there for them too. I truly do what I love, every day.

Julia Watts Watts

Hello, my name is Julia Van Der Sommen and I am the Queen of local, ethical product development and manufacturing of fashion and textile products. I help fashion labels, both established and start up with the pattern making, sample making, grading and product development and manufacturing of their product through our business Sample Room. For established labels, we take the hassle out of developing your product. As a one stop shop, we are the development team you don't have in house. We are there to take the responsibility of developing your product through to a manufacturing ready package, and beyond onto manufacturing. For start ups, we demystify and bring clarity to the mysterious product development and manufacturing industry by educating and supporting them through the process whilst working on their pattern making, sample making and grading through to manufacturing through industry leading Fashion Label Launchpad program. We also offer small run production for our mentees to assist them in starting out without overcommitting and spending all their money without testing the market first. The Fashion (clothing) industry is far more complex than anyone would imagine. It is also a difficult market to break into if you don't know how to brief pattern makers or manufacturers. Education and support is key. I love helping designers find a more efficient way to develop and manufacture and to educate new designers or re-educate established fashion labels on local manufacturing to help people take back control and thrive in the current market If you are interested in knowing more, please join me in our weekly Manufacturing Discovery Masterclass. A live Q&A where you can learn what it takes to be a designer, what your responsibilities are, how to choose a manufacturer and the costs and timelines involved.  Start Up Launching Point - Sample Room
