 – Can Your Business Run Without You? Signs You’re the Bottleneck & Systems That Fix It – with Kristin Skinner

Can your business run without you? Discover the signs that you’re the bottleneck of your business with organisational systems expert, Kristin Skinner.

Every business owner eventually asks themselves one question: Why does everything still come back to me? Every task. Every decision. Every question from the team. Let’s talk about how to create systems that build a business that can run even when you’re away — so you can confidently answer “yes” to the question, “Can your business run without you?”

In the first few years of business, we’re used to doing everything ourselves. But most business owners don’t shift how they opperate as they grow, which creates a business that is fully owner-dependent. That business can still be successful. It can still be profitable. It can still thrive.

But it all relies on the energy of one person: you.

Kristin Skinner is here to help your business run without you, and she’s got a pretty impressive resume of doing the same for others. She has spent twenty years scaling design organisations across Fortune 100 companies, leading teams from 30 to 12,000 people. She’s helped scale companies including Expedia Group, Chase, Capital One, Adaptive Path, and Microsoft, and she’s the co-author of Org Design for Design Orgs. Today, she helps leaders redesign the systems in their businesses so the bsuienss can fun like a machine, while the owner gets to be human (instead of superhuman).

Can your business run without you? You’ll be able to answer after this episode. Kristin shares the signs you’ve become the bottleneck, how to run a diagnostic on your business to see if it can run without you, and the systems that let you finally get out of the day-to-day.

Capable leaders often don’t fail because they lack determination. No one doubts the work-ethic of business owners, or the grit. But too often, business owners build businesses that require them to be at the centre of everything in order to keep things running.

And the solution to that is never to ‘just work harder’. It’s to build the systems around you for support, so you get to take on the CEO role, while the business works in the details.

Can Your Business Run Without You? Here’s What You’ll Discover In This Episode:

  • The clearest sings that you’ve become the bottleneck in your own business.
  • How to honestly answer the question “Can your business run without you” by running Kristin’s test.
  • Why “I’ve explained this a dozen times” is a glaring red flag that you’ve got a structure problem to deal with.
  • The calendar test — and how to spot the “work about work” eating up 60-70% of your week.
  • Why the decisions you make don’t stick… and the three things every decision needs to get follow-through.
  • Kristin’s People, Practice, Programs framework for designing a business that scales and can run without you.
  • How to build a living operating system (vision, principles, strategy, roadmap) that you can actually use.
  • When to tweak your business… versus when to rethink the whole system.
  • The one blind spot that keeps experienced women owners stuck being the “invisible infrastructure”.

About the host

Suzi Dafnis

Hi there. I’m Suzi Dafnis, CEO at HerBusiness. My BIG passion is helping women business owners to grow and scale their business, so that they can create their ideal lifestyle and make a difference in the world. Every day I am inspired by the more than 30,000 amazing women (and men!) in our community and I love finding the best education, mentors, and resources from around the globe, to help them get the skills, knowledge, and support they need to succeed. It’s been my privilege to lead HerBusiness (formerly The Australian Businesswomen’s Network) for the past 23 years (two+ decades – WOW!) because, whilst I’ve enjoyed success in business, I’ve also experienced the highs and the lows – sometimes you can feel on top of the world and in control and other times you can feel isolated, exhausted and stuck. What has made the biggest difference for me has always been having great people around me and having a lifelong commitment to learning. That’s why I am so passionate about the work we do here at HerBusiness – providing a Connection Network for women in business to get the mentors, contacts, referrals, knowledge, and skills they need to grow their confidence, make more money, build their businesses, expand their network and create the lives they love. My entrepreneurial journey started in the spare room of my Sydney apartment in 1994 when my business partner and I started a boutique events company that represented speakers and authors from the USA, here in Australia. Over the years I’ve grown multiple multi-million dollar businesses in the events, publishing and education niches – with teams in Australia, New Zealand, and the USA. Not everything has worked and there has been a degree of trial and error, and a lot of bumps in the road. But I have always had a strong commitment to always surrounding myself with great mentors and like-minded peers – a Connection Network that I can depend on and who can depend on me to be there for them too. I truly do what I love, every day.
