Tips for a Productive Virtual Sessions
Running a productive session is often left up to the Mentor however some level of responsibility must be placed on the shoulders of the Mentoree.
Here are some tips:
- Request that your Mentoree send you an Agenda for the session – at least 24 hours before the session is scheduled.
- Take 5 minutes to review the Agenda before calling your Mentoree. If it is over-ambitious in your mind – be up front with your Mentoree at the commencement of the session.
- Take 5 minutes to review your notes from the last session – so that you can refer back to any outstanding items.
- Set up at least 10 mins ahead of time so that you’re ready to go on time.
- Ensure you use a headset and that your technology is set up correctly and ready to go. Tech issues only waste time and frustrate everyone.
- Check your sound settings before your session to ensure you’re ready to go as soon as you connect.
- Ensure you are in a quiet and private location for your session. It can be disconcerting for a Mentoree to ‘think’ that others are listening in to the conversation – or to be disturbed by background noise.
- Have a means by which to take notes.
Have access to your notes from the previous session, any questions you want to ask and an idea of what you want to get out of the session. - Keep the session moving – but match the pace of your Mentoree. Remember, it is their session – and that they should be able to change the Agenda depending on what ever is going on for them.
- The job of a Mentor is to offer experience and to assist in navigating a path that may be unfamiliar to the Mentoree. But as we all know, at some stage in business you just need to have someone that believes in you.
- Have fun!
