Her Story

Caroline Clements graduated from Monash University in 1989 in Arts and Marketing but she wanted more, so she decided to go abroad to improve her work experience. It was there in London that she entered the men’s fashion industry, working with a tailoring firm that specialised in visiting the client in his office or home. Many busy businessmen appreciated this service.

Caroline returned to Australia during the recession and had planned to work as a professional marketer and gain further experience before setting up her own firm. However, suitable work became hard to find. At the age of 24, Caroline decided to take the plunge and set up her own business. In July 1992, Suit Yourself was launched. It started from a small room in a ‘shared house’, a modest loan from the family, and referrals to potential clients.

Caroline modelled her new business on the skills and knowledge that she has gained in London. To this, she added her own individual flair – using quality Savile Row or French suit and shirt fabrics, and a range of imported ties. Caroline visited her clients by appointment at either their office or home. Not only did the client have a wide choice of fabrics, they also had access to Caroline’s advice on fashion, cut and colour.

The business began to grow through word of mouth referrals, but was about to become more recognised. Caroline entered the Victorian “Operation Livewire”, a competition for young people in small business, where she became a state finalist. This brought further exposure on radio and TV, and her business expanded.

The Melbourne office was operating successfully and Caroline saw an opportunity to open an office in Sydney. The Sydney office was open for six years before Caroline decided to close it when she started a family, and concentrate on the Melbourne office. Caroline now has over 20 years experience in the suit industry and has a well-established client base in Melbourne. Her clients purchase on a regular basis and the majority of new business comes from word of mouth.

Caroline Clements’ strategies for success have remained the same since her first day of operation and she continues to review each element of the business to maintain its success.

One thing that Caroline has learnt over the years is that to be successful, you need to believe in yourself and your capabilities, and encourage those around you to do the same.

Strategies for Success

  1. Maintain an ongoing review of all aspects of the business, especially forward planning, business systems and time management.
  2. Build client trust and relationships through quality products and good service.
  3. Be resourceful and maximise opportunities.
  4. Keep all lines of communication open.
  5. Enjoy work. Be positive. Keep a sense of humour.
