In this episode of Social Media for Small Business, Cat Matson interviews the Social Media Manager for the Queensland Police, James Kliemt, about his experience in building and maintaining one of the most popular police service Facebook pages in the world. The QPS page attracted quite a bit of attention during the Queensland floods in 2011, when it, along with the force’s Twitter account, were used to help spread the notice of evacuation orders. Since then, follower count and engagement with the page have continued to grow.
When it comes to establishing an online presence that makes a difference, any old content isn’t enough — social media is more than just an outlet for dispassionate, slapdash advertisements. As Kliemt says, “Your social media can be a bland wasteland full of generic, homogenised corporate spin. Or it can be the most powerful tool there is to shift public perceptions, reshape the mainstream media narrative and allow you to achieve your long term corporate strategic objectives.”
