Cat Matson is one of Australia’s leading commentators on social media. In this recent herBusiness podcast, Cat explains the beneficial and lasting impact that a social media presence may have, especially for a small to medium sized business.

Cat’s “connect the dots approach to business” has particularly influenced her interest in social media. She explains that specific opportunities offered by social media, for branding, loyalty building, or promotions, have caused it to become more than just a trend.

As only 36% of small businesses have a social media presence, Cat explains how disinterest or ignorance regarding social media closes off many small business’s marketing and branding opportunities. Overall, in order to make the best use of social media, Cat recommends you identify your bottom line objective. If you’re aiming to increase profits, as most businesses are, then, consider how you might implement social media to drive sales.

Cat describes the profundity of social media’s development and presence:

  1. Social media’s revolutionary impact on customer research and decision-making
  2. The ways in which different platforms can be specifically utilised to better connect with customers and potential customers
  3. How inspirational and organic content can be incorporated into social media to develop more personal customer relations
  4. The unique interactions, branding and opportunities for referrals that are a part of social media

About the host

Suzi Dafnis

Hi there. I’m Suzi Dafnis, CEO at HerBusiness. My BIG passion is helping women business owners to grow and scale their business, so that they can create their ideal lifestyle and make a difference in the world. Every day I am inspired by the more than 30,000 amazing women (and men!) in our community and I love finding the best education, mentors, and resources from around the globe, to help them get the skills, knowledge, and support they need to succeed. It’s been my privilege to lead HerBusiness (formerly The Australian Businesswomen’s Network) for the past 23 years (two+ decades – WOW!) because, whilst I’ve enjoyed success in business, I’ve also experienced the highs and the lows – sometimes you can feel on top of the world and in control and other times you can feel isolated, exhausted and stuck. What has made the biggest difference for me has always been having great people around me and having a lifelong commitment to learning. That’s why I am so passionate about the work we do here at HerBusiness – providing a Connection Network for women in business to get the mentors, contacts, referrals, knowledge, and skills they need to grow their confidence, make more money, build their businesses, expand their network and create the lives they love. My entrepreneurial journey started in the spare room of my Sydney apartment in 1994 when my business partner and I started a boutique events company that represented speakers and authors from the USA, here in Australia. Over the years I’ve grown multiple multi-million dollar businesses in the events, publishing and education niches – with teams in Australia, New Zealand, and the USA. Not everything has worked and there has been a degree of trial and error, and a lot of bumps in the road. But I have always had a strong commitment to always surrounding myself with great mentors and like-minded peers – a Connection Network that I can depend on and who can depend on me to be there for them too. I truly do what I love, every day.

Cat Matson

Cat Matson

I teach women who get nervous and tongue-tied in meetings, think aloud and ramble when presenting or experience imposter syndrome when asked to present, how to speak with confidence, authority and authenticity. I do this entirely online, through my program, Impactful Presenters. So if you have access to the internet and speak English, I can help you calm your speaking nerves, articulate your key messages and effectively move your audiences (large and small) from where they are now, to where you want them to be. I have been speaking, presenting, MC-ing and moderating panels for 20+ years and I am convinced that my ability to speak with confidence and present with impact is THE most valuable skill in my professional toolkit, even though I’m not a professional speaker. In fact, in my day-job, I’m a bureaucrat, working in economic development in local government. The speaking and presentation skills I teach in Impactful Presenters are skills I use daily to; drive the change I want to see in the world, and in my community; inspire and motivate groups of stakeholders; drive effective and meaningful meetings; facilitate substantive paradigm shifts in groups of people; and deliver impact towards my personal and professional goals I know for sure that speaking is a skill, not a talent, which means ANYONE can learn how to speak confident and present impactfully. Yes, anyone. Even you 😉
