Why Business Success Doesn’t Always Bring Freedom (And What to Do About It)

You started your business for a reason.

Perhaps it was freedom. Flexibility. Financial independence. The opportunity to make a difference or do work that mattered to you.

And you’ve built something you’re proud of.

But here’s a question worth considering:

Has your business given you the freedom you originally wanted?

For many established women business owners, the answer is complicated.

The business is successful. The clients are there. Revenue is growing.

Yet their days are packed, their decisions are constantly interrupted, and there’s an underlying feeling that everything depends on them.

The obvious response is to change something in the business.

Hire another person. Delegate more. Introduce a new system. Restructure an offer.

Sometimes those changes are exactly what’s needed.

But sometimes, the real issue sits underneath the strategy.

The Patterns We Bring Into Our Businesses

Consider a business owner who struggles to say no.

She might hire a team to reduce her workload, but still find herself available to everyone, all the time.

Or someone who constantly second-guesses her decisions.

She might develop a brilliant new strategy, only to delay implementing it because she’s worried about what other people will think.

The external circumstances change.

The internal patterns remain.

And, surprisingly quickly, the business starts to feel just as demanding as before.

Why Inner Work Is Part of Business Growth

In Episode 386 of the HerBusiness Podcast, Suzi Dafnis introduces four stages of creating a business and life you love.

She calls them the Threshold, the Descent, the Ascent and the Reign.

The Descent is especially important.

It’s the stage where we examine our habits, internal dialogue and the expectations we’ve absorbed about how women should behave.

Be helpful. Be agreeable. Don’t ask for too much. Don’t outshine anyone.

Those beliefs may have shaped how we built our businesses, often without us realising it.

Questioning them creates space for different choices.

Start With One Small Question

Think about something in your business that’s frustrating you right now.

Then ask yourself:

What am I continuing to do that might be contributing to this situation?

Perhaps you’re saying yes when you want to say no.

Perhaps you’re holding on to work someone else could do.

Perhaps you’re still pursuing a version of success that no longer feels meaningful.

You don’t need to change everything today.

But you can begin by recognising the difference between what your business requires and what you’ve come to expect of yourself.

Or where you might be giving your power away.

That’s a great place to start.

About the author

Suzi Dafnis

Hi there. I’m Suzi Dafnis, CEO at HerBusiness. My BIG passion is helping women business owners to grow and scale their business, so that they can create their ideal lifestyle and make a difference in the world. Every day I am inspired by the more than 30,000 amazing women (and men!) in our community and I love finding the best education, mentors, and resources from around the globe, to help them get the skills, knowledge, and support they need to succeed. It’s been my privilege to lead HerBusiness (formerly The Australian Businesswomen’s Network) for the past 23 years (two+ decades – WOW!) because, whilst I’ve enjoyed success in business, I’ve also experienced the highs and the lows – sometimes you can feel on top of the world and in control and other times you can feel isolated, exhausted and stuck. What has made the biggest difference for me has always been having great people around me and having a lifelong commitment to learning. That’s why I am so passionate about the work we do here at HerBusiness – providing a Connection Network for women in business to get the mentors, contacts, referrals, knowledge, and skills they need to grow their confidence, make more money, build their businesses, expand their network and create the lives they love. My entrepreneurial journey started in the spare room of my Sydney apartment in 1994 when my business partner and I started a boutique events company that represented speakers and authors from the USA, here in Australia. Over the years I’ve grown multiple multi-million dollar businesses in the events, publishing and education niches – with teams in Australia, New Zealand, and the USA. Not everything has worked and there has been a degree of trial and error, and a lot of bumps in the road. But I have always had a strong commitment to always surrounding myself with great mentors and like-minded peers – a Connection Network that I can depend on and who can depend on me to be there for them too. I truly do what I love, every day.
