My Connection Statement

I support writers and business owners 45+ to achieve their dream of becoming a published author. Through my 5-step Let’s Get Published framework, I help prevent overwhelm for my clients by streamlining all the steps involved in self-publishing a book.

About Me - My Biography

As a qualified publication designer and editor, and the owner of Brisbane Self Publishing Service, Kirsty Ogden is committed to helping authors produce eloquent, appealing and professional-looking books. With over 30 years’ experience in desktop publishing, editing and librarianship, she has a wealth of knowledge and expertise in all aspects of the book industry.

Working closely with a team of freelance editors, proofreaders, illustrators and graphic artists, plus with access to a trusted network of publishing professionals (including printers and print brokers, ebook conversion and audiobook production specialists), Kirsty offers clients a streamlined process to self-publish their book via her Five ‘C’s of Self Publishing framework.

My Expertise

Having worked in libraries for many years, I was seeking a change in direction so I took the plunge to fulfil a long-held ambition to study graphic design. After graduating from a Bachelor of Design and Communication, I enrolled in a Graduate Certificate in Editing and Publishing with a view to running my own freelance editing and publishing business. In 2012, I established my original business – Epiphany Editing & Publishing. Then, in 2014, I set up a separate business – Brisbane Self Publishing Service – to support writers and business owners to self-publish their book.

When I look back over my career, I’m conscious of how I’ve come a full circle: from dealing with the final product – books in libraries – to being involved in their creation. I enjoy helping my clients with all the steps involved in publishing their book, including editing and proofreading, internal page formatting/typesetting and designing the book cover.

I gain a great deal of satisfaction from supporting authors to achieve their goal of sharing their story with the world. Like them, I’m thrilled when I get to witness the reward of all their hard work – receiving a ‘Proud Author’ photo with them holding a printed copy of their book in their hands!

My Passions

Launching my own business was a huge step for me. Yet, now I look back and wonder why it took me so long to recognise that this destination would be my ‘happy place’ in my work life.

I love the freedom and flexibility that comes with being your own boss. Also I find the opportunity to continually expand my horizons through gleaning useful information and learning new skills through developing relationships with other business owners a source of enjoyment.

For me, working with other creative people and helping them to realise their publishing dreams is both a privilege and a responsibility; I’m passionate about delivering an end result that makes my clients’ heart sing! I also place great value on building a connection network of industry professionals in order to assist my clients and ensure that I keep up-to-date within my field.

My Interests

My interests include:

  • Books and reading (of course!)
  • Art and design
  • Films and theatre
  • Meditation, yoga and natural health
  • My family and friends
  • Meeting new people

How I Can Help Other Members

As a life-long student and aficionado of language and words, I’d be very happy to offer writing/publishing advice (via a 10–15 minute phone call) to other HerBusiness members.

I’m keen to make a positive contribution to the HerBusiness community via the Goals Groups and help other women in business with support and feedback.

Why I Became a HerBusiness Member

Working as a solopreneur, I’ve explored various networking options over the years – often without a great deal of success. But when I registered for the free online networking event that HerBusiness hosted a few weeks ago, I was so impressed at how geniuely welcoming everyone seemed to be and how well organised the events and communication were that I wanted in staightaway!  I’m looking forward to getting to know other like-minded women business owners within the HerBusiness community – sharing notes with them and learning from their wealth of knowledge and experience.
