My Connection Statement
I help people that enjoy crafts or DIY but feel they have limited time or confidence, to create high quality light related projects that are quick and easy to achieve with my “all you need” DIY kits.
About Me - My Biography
My name is Cheryl and I am the founder of Light n Crafty. I wanted to make DIY, Crafts and Upcycling more accessible to people like me, who are put off by the “you will need” lists and who feel they don’t have enough time, or skills to achieve great results. Those that have demons whispering in their ear that “it’s too hard & complicated”, or “you can’t do this”. I wanted to give these people an ever growing range of projects that will give them amazing results and fill them with the “I made that” warm glow.
You can read all about my Eureka moment in my My Story section on my website, it’s quite a funny story involving a “discussion” between my husband and I, a cupboard shelf, and an embarrassing amount of empty wine bottles! Skipping to the moment, I decided to found Light n Crafty and create my kits. Takes us to 2019. I started with my vision of being a trusted, go to place to get fun and achievable craft/DIY kits from that have everything you need in them! I believe quality shouldn’t have to break the bank so one of my core principles is to have FAIR prices. Fair to you, my customers, fair to me, and fair to my suppliers. Which leads me nicely to another one of my principles. My products are ethically sourced and as close as I can make them environmentally friendly. My packaging is recycled and recyclable. I avoid single use plastic and will wrap products in tissue instead. I visit my suppliers to ensure they look after their workers and provide the right level of health and safety for them. My suppliers are small family run business like mine and I make a point to stay in touch with them and ask after their children. My business is does blur the lines of business and pleasure, so I aspire to run all aspects of it in a personal way.
I am lucky enough to say that I live on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula, in Victoria, Australia, but, I am originally from Stoke on Trent, England. This is where they made the famous pottery such as Wedgewood and Royal Doulton. Fun Fact: People from Manchester are called Mancunians, People from Liverpool are scousers, Birmingham residents are Brummies….Stoke on Trent…Pot Heads!! Hmm make of that what you will!
We moved to Australia in 2017 because we wanted a better life for our 2 young boys. The school system here is far more rounded and we definitely feel safer and the sense of community here makes me think it must be similar to the world my parents grew up in. I’m not going to lie…we have had the most horrendous experience with the Australian Visa system, or more specifically immigration agents and lawyers, but, when something is important you fight tooth and nail for it and nothing is more important to me than my family!
My Expertise
My background is in accounts and am an ACCA chartered accountant. I have hands on work experience in all areas of a finance department, from Credit Control to Purchase Ledger, to Management Accounts.
I spent time as a finance trainer, developing and delivering training courses for new starters all the way to teaching Senior Leadership Teams that understanding the books was all of their responsibility and how they could make the most out of their budgets and KPI’s.
Through my time as a Financial Controller I engaged in a variety of end to end business analysis which helped me gain a position on several high profile ERP implementation programs as a Finance Specialist Business Analyst.
Moving to Australia…I feel like I could add Immigration Expert to my CV, but instead I will say expert researcher!
I now run my own business creating craft kits that enables me to express and enjoy the creative side of me and my key desire to help others succeed.
My Passions
I am passionate about helping others. Thinking out side the box. Singing and dancing.
My Interests
I love a good book! Murder mystery are my favorites with James Patterson and Dean Kootz being my go to authors. I also love to learn and try new things. Such as DIY or personal development. If I get a certificate, or a finished object I’m on it!
