Why Successful Women Entrepreneurs Don’t Go It Alone (and What They’re Doing Instead)

I started my very first business in the spare bedroom of my tiny apartment.

It was me, my partner, and the comforting psshrkkkskreeekkankankchchchch sounds of dial up internet.

Like most new business owners and entrepreneurs, I was doing everything myself.

Marketing. Sales. Finances. Tech. Admin. Customer service.

All of it.

And if I didn’t know how to do something, I’d stay up late trying to figure it out. I was wearing every hat, working morning until night, and believing that that’s just how it works.

But after 30 years in business, here is one truth I know:

Most successful women business owners don’t go it alone.

There’s that old proverb that says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

And nothing has been more true in my own journey, and in the journeys of the thousands of women business owners I have helped over the years.

Successful women business owners build networks. They find communities that lift them higher. They surround themselves with people who “just get it” when dealing with the challenges that come with running a business – while juggling everything else that life throws at us.

The ‘Solo Success Story’ Myth: Why a Women Entrepreneurs Network Changes Everything

We’ve been fed this messaging that if we just work hard enough, we will eventually succeed.

I don’t believe that.

There are plenty of women business owners who are working themselves into the ground every day. It doesn’t mean their businesses are successful, let alone sustainable… let alone SCALABLE.

What truly makes the difference is the community around you.

Your team. Your mentors. Your peers. Your network. Your connections.

I have seen women double their income within a short time, just by changing their community. I have seen women create brand new offers based on the inspiration they got from one little conversation with a peer. I have seen women getting featured in podcasts, blogs, news articles, and press… simply because they chose to stop going it alone.

How One Woman Entrepreneur Achieved 500% Growth In Her Business Through Community

Yvonne Shepherd, HerBusiness member, growing her women's adventure business after joining a women entrepreneurs network
HerBusiness member Yvonne Shepherd grew her women’s adventure business by 500% after joining a women entrepreneur network.

Yvonne Shepherd was walking along The Great Ocean Road in Victoria when she knew what she wanted to do with her life and business – bringing women together by offering world-class women’s hiking programs, walking adventures, and outdoor fitness education.

Women’s Fitness Adventures was born, and she had year-on-year growth… but then the pandemic hit.

The business was stopped in its tracks.

Travel bans meant she had to cancel pre-booked adventures. Her entire business model was at risk due to the pandemic.

So, Yvonne tapped into the programs inside HerBusiness – and she dug deep into the resources, pivoting to an online business model. She used her knowledge, the mentoring within the community, and the access to resources and education to create online experiences for thousands of women.

And guess what?

She has had 500% growth in her business. She now takes groups of women all over the world, has thousands of people in her community, and is able to live her dream because of her business.

“If I had not invested in my business education, I would still have a hobby.”

How Fiona Doubled Her Revenue, Built a Community, and Leveraged Her Income

Fiona Keary, HerBusiness Network member, who doubled her revenue and built leveraged income through a women entrepreneurs network.
With the right support, Fiona went from 1:1 services to doubling her revenue and creating leveraged income streams

When Fiona Keary clicked on an ad in her Facebook feed years ago, she had no idea what the power of community could do for her business, Style Liberation.

Since having access to resources, a network of women at her back, and the consistency and accountability a community brings… she has doubled her revenue.

On top of that, she has changed her business model completely – going from exclusively offering 1:1 styling consultations to having multiple streams of leveraged income and building a thriving community with her 35+ Where to Shop Facebook group.

“Being in a community of like-minded women with the same ambitions and goals, being mentored and having that check-in with someone who has been there… that is the GOLD that is HerBusiness.”

How a Women Entrepreneurs Network Helped Tasha Go From Zero Support to Impacting Thousands of Women

Tasha Jennings, HerBusiness member, growing her fertility business and building leveraged programs with the support of a women entrepreneurs network
Tasha stopped growing alone… and leaning on her community. Now, she’s growing like never before.

When Tasha Jennings started Conceive Baby, she had a goal to help more women and couples improve their fertility wellbeing to create healthy pregnancies.

Her knowledge and expertise were established – but business support? No one around her was able to help with what she needed.

After finding her community? She has created multiple leveraged programs, launched an online course, started a podcast, and has reached major success through her speaking engagements.

She found a clear direction and access to business knowledge so she could help more women than ever before – all thanks to leaving the solo journey behind and leaning on others.

“When I started my business, I had next to no support in business terms. I didn’t have people around me who understood business. Now, business is finally financially rewarding and growing year on year.”

What Successful Women Entrepreneurs in HerBusiness Do Differently

When I take a look at women like Yvonne, Fiona, and Tasha – women in the HerBusiness Network who are creating incredible businesses, they all have a few things in common.

1. They find a circle that lifts them.

They aren’t spending time in rooms that drain their energy.
They intentionally seek out the conversations that inspire their growth, that show them how to innovate – and give them the courage to take action.

2. They ask for (and offer) help.

When successful women business owners don’t know something… they don’t spend countless hours trying to learn it themselves, with no help.
They know their time is worth more than that.
They are both generous with their knowledge, AND they aren’t afraid to say, “Hey, I don’t know this – can anyone help?”
That ability to ask for help and lean on others is what creates a sustainable and scalable business.

3. They invest not just in information… but connection

Because you can Google anything these days.
But Google can’t give you the experience of being understood by other life-minded women.
It can’t encourage you to move forward with that launch you’ve been putting off.
It can’t hold you accountable to create that online course you’ve been dreaming about.
Only a community of other women business owners can do that.

Why You Don’t Have to Do Business Alone (Even If You’re a Solopreneur!)

FAQs About Joining a Women Entrepreneurs Network

1. What are the benefits of joining a women entrepreneurs’ network?

Being a part of a community or women entrepreneurs network gives you access to the mentorship, collaboration, resources, and accountability that you just don’t get ‘going it alone’. You’ll learn from other women who have already solved the challenges you’re facing now, get feedback on your ideas, and build long-term relationships that could lead to partnerships, referrals, and so many new opportunities.

2. How do female business networks help with growth?

The simple answer? People with support are able to think long-term. It’s not about a quick fix or a one-off strategy. Your community determines your path – how you decide which path is right for you, how you’ll go about walking it, and how easily you’ll be swayed off of it.

3. How can I join the HerBusiness Network?

If you’ve been in business for years and you’re ready to grow with a community around you – if you’re looking for more support, strategy, accountability, and like-minded women, you can apply to join the HerBusiness Network now. About the author

Suzi Dafnis

Hi there. I’m Suzi Dafnis, CEO at HerBusiness. My BIG passion is helping women business owners to grow and scale their business, so that they can create their ideal lifestyle and make a difference in the world. Every day I am inspired by the more than 30,000 amazing women (and men!) in our community and I love finding the best education, mentors, and resources from around the globe, to help them get the skills, knowledge, and support they need to succeed. It’s been my privilege to lead HerBusiness (formerly The Australian Businesswomen’s Network) for the past 23 years (two+ decades – WOW!) because, whilst I’ve enjoyed success in business, I’ve also experienced the highs and the lows – sometimes you can feel on top of the world and in control and other times you can feel isolated, exhausted and stuck. What has made the biggest difference for me has always been having great people around me and having a lifelong commitment to learning. That’s why I am so passionate about the work we do here at HerBusiness – providing a Connection Network for women in business to get the mentors, contacts, referrals, knowledge, and skills they need to grow their confidence, make more money, build their businesses, expand their network and create the lives they love. My entrepreneurial journey started in the spare room of my Sydney apartment in 1994 when my business partner and I started a boutique events company that represented speakers and authors from the USA, here in Australia. Over the years I’ve grown multiple multi-million dollar businesses in the events, publishing and education niches – with teams in Australia, New Zealand, and the USA. Not everything has worked and there has been a degree of trial and error, and a lot of bumps in the road. But I have always had a strong commitment to always surrounding myself with great mentors and like-minded peers – a Connection Network that I can depend on and who can depend on me to be there for them too. I truly do what I love, every day.
