“I think Cynthia Montgomery’s The Strategist has been an incredibly fabulous book. It talks about strategy, and I think that maybe we underestimate the importance of strategic thinking within a business, and particularly I think sometimes small businesses need to be looking at that. It also touches on one of my great loves, and that is innovation, and how incredibly important that is. In Australia as we are, we don’t necessarily have the economies of scale, so that I would definitely recommend. A good friend Peter Switzer gave me his book 350 Ways to Grow a Business. It’s like a quick fix book. There’s books that I read, and then there’s little books I can grab and read, maybe some case studies, and they will just be a quick fix, where I can go ‘ok, fab, there’s my inspiration.’
I think that I don’t know everything, and I would never ever say I know everything. I think that part of being a good leader is being able to listen, and I think that’s incredibly important. I really make a conscious effort to listen, and to always try and continue learning. Whether that’s learning about business, whether that’s learning about cheese making, or people, or what’s happening in my region or the community. Knowledge is power.”
