Maria Kotsiaris of Mobile Sensory Play Garden had to be resourceful when it came to keeping her child entertained at a young age.
Hating coffee dates and walks in the pram, the only other place that Maria’s child enjoyed was the garden. Maria and her child spent most of their time there: singing, reading, pointing, and exploring. Even to this day, there is nothing that soothes and nurtures her child more than playing in the outdoors.
After noticing how much her child loves playing in the outdoors, Maria decided to help other parents do the same with their children. She saw how much time children spent looking at screens and created the Mobile Sensory Play Garden which is an outdoor nature based experience for children. This is an outdoor nature based experience where children can learn about themselves, play, paint and be creative.
An advocate for child led play, particularly outdoor play, Maria’s passion and life journey has turned to sharing the joys of sensory play with young children.
What do you enjoy most about running your own business?
Flexibility to work part-time on my business and still be able to spend quality time with my family. As I type this my toddler is pulling at my arm to play with him. Love the struggle…oops i mean balance:). Connecting with other like-minded passionate nurturing people and businesses.
What three pieces of advice do you wish you’d been given when you started?
- How to map out the customer experience a bit better for face to face activities.
- Done is better than perfect.
- If you are procrastinating on every little thing you need to do to get started look at why this is so and heal that part of you before you keep pushing uphill.
What advice would YOU give someone thinking about starting a business?
Go for it! The worst thing that can happen is that it doesn’t work the first time you try but then it’s just to get back up on the horse again – or not. You decide, but you won’t know if it’ll work or not if you haven’t even tried.
(And things always tend to work out in one way or another, don’t they?!)
What skills and knowledge areas would you recommend those starting out in business get acquainted with quickly?
If you aren’t a numbers person, definitely seek a financial adviser who can work through your numbers with you and teach you what you need to consider when costing up new a product and service.
What does your IDEAL business look like? Even if you’re not there yet, what would it look like if your business was ideal?
To have a small but tight team (5-10 people) who supports, empowers and pushes each other within healthy boundaries.
What problem does being a Member of the HerBusiness Network solve for you and your business? And, how?
